A brave and intrepid field of 56 teed off yesterday, with a forecast of imminent heavy rain. For once the forecast was spot-on, and the competition was curtailed to 14 holes. This was particularly disappointing, as the event had been moved to November this year to avoid the wet and cold weather that we often get in December!

The format had also been changed to a pairs Texas Scramble, and great credit to the field for turning up and avoiding leaving their partners in the lurch. All players met in the warm clubhouse following the round and enjoyed a superb roast turkey lite-bite.

Results:

Due to players having to enter zeros for holes 15-18, the computer settings had to be switched to Stableford scoring in order to avoid disqualifying the whole field. As the competition was intended to be strokeplay, the soggy cards were checked by Dave Fletcher and Phil Tennant later in the day, and with an appropriate reduction in each pair’s handicap the strokeplay scores were calculated. These confirmed the 1-2-3 placings calculated by the computer.

This year, there is a new Seniors Championship trophy – the McLachlan Trophy, for the best Nett score, won by Minty Chopra with a nett score of 65.

The winner of the Gross Championship Trophy was Mike McRae with a very creditable 74.

At the NSMGL Field Day held at Whitley Bay Golf Club last Thursday, 10 players represented the City, 4 scores were to count for the Ken Clarke Trophy.

Our leading scorers were Keith Ridden 36 points, Gordon Lamb 36 points, Jim Trigg 36 points, and Keith Wilkinson 35 points. John Jones also had 35 points, but not a counter.

Arcot Hall and Whitley Bay teams both had 145 points, we were 3rd with 143.

Gordon Lamb won his category, with Arnie Minford in 3rd. place. Keith Ridden finished 3rd in his category.

Keith Wilkinson got nearest the pin.

On an atrocious day, weather wise, overall the team did the City proud.
