Newcastle and District League Whitley Bay at home

Captain's Corner : Newcastle and District League Whitley Bay at home

With the league being so close at the halfway stage, a big win was much needed.

The lads got off to a fast start with Andrew Minnikin winning 6 & 5 against veteran Paul Taylor.

Zak won by the same score against Derek Johnson, and Karl Mossom followed up with a 5 & 4 win against Jason Brown.

Paul Souter wasn't at his best and suffered his first defeat of the season with a 5 & 3 loss to Tom Reid.

A struggling Phil Ridden won his match with shear determination 2 & 1 against Chris Graham.

8 - 2 at this stage with Ian Davidson and Dan Beeson the only match on the course:

Dan won 14 to go 1 up, Ian fought back to all square with a birdie on 15.

16th was halved, so still A/S.

Ian hit a lovely iron into 17th from a slightly awkward position: Dan missed the green to the left, then chipped to about 8 feet: Ian ran his eagle putt about 3 feet past:

Dan holed, leaving Ian with a tester which he converted for the half.

On to the 18th: With our biggest crowd of the year watching on, Ian hit a great drive down the left side: unlucky Dan (left handed) cut his tee shot to finish out of bounds, leaving Ian to pitch on the green for a hard fought victory.

Final result 10 -2 which moves us 4 clear of Arcot Hall and 7 clear of Tyneside.

Fantastic to see the lads turn out to support the team:

David Moffat, Ian Ferguson, Miles Watson, Ian Frazer, Jim Trigg, Gav Ayres, Dave Lamb, Tony Dancer, John Blackburn, John Harrison, Dave Fletcher, John Cross, Bill Gibson, Alan Johnson, Phil Tennant and 'on course' correspondent Simon Coultas. Hope to see Brian Hodgson again soon when he's fit and well.

Apologies to anyone I've missed.

Next it's Tynemouth away on Tuesday.

Good luck to Greame Coulson, Karl Mossom, Andrew Minnikin, Phil Ridden and Ian Davidson in County Championship Qualifying at Whitley Bay on Saturday.
