Club Championship Final

A warm and sunny day saw a closely contested Club Championship final between Angie Heads and Jude Moore. A good crowd of spectators witnessed some superb golf from both players with Jude coming out on top. Barbara Johnson beat Barbara Franklin in our Bunny Bronze Championship. Well done to all finalists.

Silver Championship

3-5th May 2023 at the City of Newcastle Golf Club

The Silver championship this year was hosted by the City of Newcastle Golf club. I would like to say a huge thank you to all involved for all their help and expertise in organising the event and to the City staff for looking after us so well over the three days.

50 ladies took part in the first round qualifying competition. The weather conditions had been poor, to say the least, over the last 2-3 months. However, the sun made an appearance, and we all enjoyed a warm and rain free day!.

The course was playing very long and the semi was punishing. Thanks go to Craig and his green keeping staff who presented the course beautifully considering the recent conditions.

Best Gross and first qualifier, claiming the Lou Stewart salver, was Candy Brown (High Gosforth park) with 81. Close on her heels was Gemma Duxfield (Alnmouth) who posted an 83 and won the Nichol Trophy for the best nett score 83-10=73. Second Nett was Jen Langrish (Stocksfield) 94-21=73 who also claimed the Kennedy trophy for a player over 70. Third nett was Angie Rumney (Ponteland) 85-11=74. Linda Wilson (Gosforth) took runner up in the Kennedy trophy 93-18=75. All results can be found on our website. Well done to everyone.

Thursday brought wintry conditions back yet again. The excitement and nerves were building for the first round of the match play knockout consisting of the top 16 gross score qualifiers. Two of the matches were very close and went to the 19th and 20th holes. In the afternoon the remaining 8 players continued in very windy, cold conditions, despite this there was some excellent golf.

Friday brought an early start again and our remaining 4 players consisting of Candy Brown, Susan He(Hexham), Gemma Duxfield and Lynne Liddle (Gosforth) set off in slightly warmer weather. Once again the level of golf was a pleasure to watch and our two losing semi finalists Susan He and Gemma Duxfield should be very proud.

So, after 4 consecutive rounds of golf our two finalists Candy and Lynne set off just after 1pm. The game was tight and Candy began to edge into the lead despite some brilliant shots from Lynne. The thunder clouds were rolling in and I thought we would have to suspend play!. However, Candy managed to claim victory on the 16th hole much to her delight. A very worthy Champion.

We all managed to make it back to the club house before the heavens opened and the prize and trophy presentation ran smoothly as ever thanks to Liz our competition secretary.

I would like to say congratulations to all who took part and to those who won prizes I hope you enjoyed them. I hope your cream teas went down well, particularly with it being the coronation weekend.

I announced the team in alphabetical order for the Richardson Trophy matches this year.

I thoroughly enjoyed the whole event and am so looking forward to our matches and playing alongside what will be a great team.

I would love to see as many spectators as possible (with yellow tops) at our home games. It really boosts the players morale when they see the supporters.

Ladies Coffee Morning

Our first coffee morning since 2018 and judging by the turn out it was well overdue.  The clubhouse was full, the cakes were amazing and we were entertained by John Franklin on his saxophone.  The ladies thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the date for next year is already in the diary.  Thank you to the ladies committee, the cake makers, helpers and those who came with their arts and crafts.  And thank you to everyone who attended and made it such a great event.

Ladies Xmas Party!

The ladies Christmas party was a great success despite the course being closed so no golf was played. John Franklin played Christmas tunes on his saxophone and we were also joined for the third year by our favourite choir. A fabulous afternoon tea was provided for the older ladies and soup and a roll for those who had hoped to golf. All in all it was a lovely festive day. Thank you to all of the committee who helped to make it such a success!
