Trial process for competitions during Covid restrictions

General Club Noticeboard : Trial process for competitions during Covid restrictions

Following England Golf’s announcement that three and fourball golf can recommence we have been looking at options to re-introduce safe competitive golf back to the City. The traditional methods of signing into competitions and returning scorecards are not currently practical. Having looked at the options available we consider that the safest option involves use of a new scoring app that has just been made available for trial by the providers of our club’s computer system, Club V1. It transmits the entered scores from your mobile phone directly to the Club V1 systems. The large majority of members already have access to the “HowDidIDo” App, and use it for checking competition results and signing into some club competitions. We have carried out some initial trialling which has been successful.

We have set up some further trial competitions for all club members (men and ladies) who are playing this Saturday, 6th June and Sunday, 7th June. The purpose of the trials is to introduce members to the app, to assess its suitability for use in competitions, and to iron out any procedural difficulties caused by moving off the traditional scoring method. The trials will have a nominal 20 pence entry fee, which will be refunded at the end of the trial, and will be non-competitive, not counting for handicap. There will be no prizes, although we will publish the results at the end of play for each day for information and to test the processes work correctly. Players can play off any tee (white, yellow or red). We want as many people as possible to enter the trial to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the app prior to recommencing competitive golf.

To download HowDidIDo

Players need to ensure that they have the HowDidIDo app downloaded on their mobile phone, and that they know their username and password. The app can be downloaded from your Apple App Store or Android Google Play. Alternatively the app is available on your computer internet browser at The username is the same email address that you have registered on Club V1. If you don’t know your password there is an option to reset it when logging into HowDidIDo.

To check that you have sufficient funds on your club card

Players can check the balance of their club card on the Club V1 Members Hub app (selecting the “Card” option from the menu). If you need to add funds select the “Top up purse” option and follow the instructions. If you don’t have the Club V1 Members Hub app it can be downloaded from your Apple App Store or Android Google Play.

Alternatively members can visit and enter this reference, which is unique to your bar card E2P3PC8-GP8635 and follow the instructions to top your card up.

Instructions to enter a competition using the HowDidIDo app

Once you open the HowDidIDo app, select “Today’s Golf” option from the menu at the top right of the screen (three lines).

Sign In to the competition

Select the "Sign In” option, and then select today’s competition “Covid Restrictions Trial”, and then “Sign In”.

Recording your score during the round

You are still required to record the score for you and your partner as you would normally during the round using a pencil and scorecard, but without ever passing the card to your partner. There is no requirement to sign the card. Scorecards are available in the Pro Shop, if required.

Entering your score on HowDidIDo at the end of the round

After completing the round you must verbally (at a safe distance) confirm the scores on your scorecard with your partner (previously known as the marker). You should retain a copy of the scores that you have kept for you and your partner (without swapping over the cards), as the competition team will confirm the scores with the partners of leading players, prior to confirming competition results.

Once you have verbally agreed the scores you should use the “Enter scores” option on the app. Enter the scores for each hole, toggling backwards and forwards through the holes, using the + and – buttons to select the correct score. Enter a “0” for any hole with a no-score. Once all scores are entered select “Finish”, and then “Confirm” to confirm the score is correct and agreed with your partner. Your score will then be submitted to Club V1. You should select “Finish” to conclude the score entry.

Live Leaderboard

You can select the Live Leaderboard option to view a summary of the scores returned.
Assessment of the Trial.

Following your game we would welcome your feedback by replying to this email. We will assess the success of the trials on Monday: considering whether any procedural improvements are required, feeding back any issues to ClubV1 and deciding whether the app is ready to use for formal competitions.

Help and Support

If you have any questions or do not know your HowDidIDo Username or Password, and to provide feedback, please email, and a member of the Competitions team or Office will contact you back.
