General Club Noticeboard : Tombstone Competition Rules

Winter Flag Competition Saturday 25th January

We are running a Singles Flag Competition this weekend, played over 14 holes.  Like other winter competitions, it is open to Ladies and Men.  As we haven’t played a flag competition for some time we’ve detailed the rules and guidance below, and the Pro’s shop will be able to clarify any questions on Saturday.

Each player is allocated an allowance with which to get as far round the course as possible.  The allowance is made up of the par score for the first 14 holes (53) plus 14/18 of their winter handicap, rounded to the nearest whole number.  The winner is the player who gets furthest round the course after they have used up their allowance. It is possible that some players will not have used up all of their shots after 14 holes, in which case they carry on playing down the remaining holes until they have used up all of their shots.

For example, a player with a winter handicap of 18 will receive a handicap of 14 to reflect the competition being played over 14 holes.  This gets added to the par score for the first 14 holes, to give a total allowance of 53 + 14 = 67 shots. The reckoner below identifies the allowance for each handicap and will be available in the Pro’s Shop.

The first team out in the morning will take the flag out on the course with them.  The player in that group who gets furthest round the course in their allowance will place the flag in the middle of the fairway or green, no nearer the hole from where the final shot finishes.  They will write their name on the flag.  If the player happens to lose their final shot the flag gets placed where the shot was played from the ball on the final shot.  The flag will only be moved on when following players get further round the course.

The scorecard should include the gross score on each hole, and on hole where the final shot is taken, mark the number of yards away from the hole that the final shot finished.  This will be used to award prizes for the top finishers. If available players should use their yardage devices to calculate the distance, otherwise, use the yardage markers to get an accurate estimate.

All scorecards should then be placed in the box after the competition, but scores should not be entered in the computer.  Entry fee is £1 per player.  Normal Strokeplay rules and Winter rules apply.
