Pop Up Gym, it is a charity and a gym with specialised equipment designed for wheelchair users with all types of physical disabilities, spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, muscular dystrophy, anything that has left someone with some sort of paralysis. The gym provides fitness training tailored to specific disabilities, as well as a unique community providing a holistic support system designed to get members fit and healthy, physically and mentally.
Drew Graham is the founder and CEO of Pop Up Gym who started his athletic career at Gosforth Harriers enjoying a lot of success on the track, winning several northern championships and competing at the British Olympic trials following which he was awarded a sports scholarship to Adams State University in Colorado. He studied human performance and physical education with a minor in business alongside competing in the National Collegiate Athletics Association winning several NCAA titles both individually and team capacities before going on and to work as an athletics coach.
In 2014 whilst in America Drew suffered a spinal cord injury following an accident. He commenced his rehab there with the help of state of the art equipment. However on returning home in 2015 he found that there wasn’t anything even close to the equipment available in America. This gave Drew the inspiration to set up the Pop Up Gym. With over two years of fund raising he was finally able to open the door of the gym which is based in Gateshead in January 2018 when his vision came true.
From the outset the plan was to take the gym around the whole of the North of England, hence the name Pop Up Gym and is still the aim in the future with continued fund raising.
This is a charity we wholeheartedly want to support with close connections to the heart of the golf club and very much hope we can help towards Drew’s hopes and aims going forward.
