I understand it was disappointing for the Captain who was unable to make the presentation on the putting green circa Grand Slam as he was dearly hoping for and must now wait for the conclusion of the 18 hole playoff.
In the absence of a result I understand that there was no opportunity to compliment the catering and bar staff as well as the field for their sportsmanship, the green staff for the presentation of the course, fit for a grand slam and those who were out in the field collecting and communicating the live scoring for the competitors who were relaxing in the clubhouse after completing their rounds along with masses of supporters.
For my part I was very impressed by the 50 plus entry with some first timers and some “old stagers” who were still more than capable of finishing well up the leader board and were about to prove it.
There was a very good and friendly atmosphere from the start although it was clearly a disappointment for those who were unable to compete at all due to injury, not to mention the two who were unable to complete the second round for other reasons and the weather was really kind apart for one very brief, but heavy shower in the morning.
The competition was wide open after the first round and predictably the old timers were right in the mix , it was there for the taking, especially those in the top ten.
The soup and sandwiches after the first round were well prepared and delicious, on demand style and instantly available in the back bar allowing competitors to come and pay and eat without delay which was commented upon by many as a very welcome and thoughtful change.
The standard of golf Alex and Phil produced was very entertaining and of the highest level with both having opportunities to top the leader board ending in all square at the 18th to rapturous applause for both as they both threatened to end it with putts that just wouldn’t drop.
The Barbeque was a great success and very well received with almost all members who didn’t have family commitments signing up to it and the timing and presentation, once again by Gavin and his staff was faultless, accommodating for all, well presented and everyone appeared to be enjoy the food and the outdoor atmosphere.
Well done to The Club Manager who managed and prepared the whole event which was very well thought out in every aspect for competitor and guest alike, a credit to the City Club Championship in every aspect.
The 18 hole play-off will be on Friday 11th August at 4pm, please come along to support Alex and Phil who will no doubt entertain you with more quality golf and good luck to both.
The Captain may get his Grand Slam type presentation on the 18th green after all
